Washington’s Crossing, located in historic Upper Makefield in Bucks County, has many historic and natural parks that surround commercial centers and residential neighborhoods. Traffic is a central issue for the community. There were no pedestrian ways or safe bicycle ways in Washington’s Crossing. Upper Makefield Township hired Carter van Dyke Associates as prime consultant, with Michael Baker Engineering as a sub-consultant, to create a period-authentic streetscape that fits the needs of the parks and the surrounding residential and commercial communities.
The design process included the acceptance of new products that were not PENNDOT accepted products at the inception of this project. The streetscape fits to the community and park in such a way that one cannot be sure whether the commercial and residential developments came before or after the streetscape was built. The Township is so pleased with the project that they are seeking funding to start a second phase to interconnect more uses in the community.
