The challenge was to develop a small town garden while meeting all of the mandated green initiatives; limited stormwater run-off and the maintenance of mature trees. A steep grade also complicated the design of terraces and vistas in a manner that did not appear contrived. A number of elements contributed to the overall design: developing a rear terrace that related to turf steps to link the upper garden; placement of a water lily pond next to the foundation of the house so that light would reflect off the water onto the ceiling of the living room; centrally locating an outdoor pavilion with kitchen and fireplace; and an overall fencing plan that created privacy within the garden. Gates, fencing, and the lily pond were enhanced with sculptures by noted artist Greg Leavitt. The garden was planted with a wide range of plants that provide seasonal interest, wonderful scents, and constant change from early spring through winter.
